How to Super Hack your 2023

News

One tip to super hack 2023.

  • Choose your upstream Habit
  • Choose habits that are at the top of the waterfall

Welcome to 2023. The start of a New Year usually means developing goals to lead a happier and healthier life. Isn’t that what New Year Resolutions are about? Although a whopping 80% of all New Year’s resolutions fail!

We have been told that you can achieve your goals by consistently performing actions directed at the desired outcome. The important point is that you must be consistent and make your actions a HABIT.

Here is a tip about identifying the right habits that can lead to achieving your goals.

The Greek Philosopher Aristotle said,

“We are the sum of our actions, and therefore our habits make all the difference.”- Aristotle

Therefore, it makes sense that establishing positive and healthy habits are important to improving your health and wellbeing.

But, not all good habits are created equal.

In The Tim Ferris podcast, Tim interviews James Clear, the author of the highly successful book, Atomic Habits.

The Tim Ferriss Show: #648: James Clear, Atomic Habits — Mastering Habits, Growing an Email List to 2M+ People, Selling 10M+ Books, Cultivating Self-Awareness, and Much More on Apple Podcasts

They discussed how some good habits are more important than others. These habits are ones, when implemented Upstream, will result in multiple benefits downstream. James and Tim described these Upstream Habits as Habits at the top of the waterfall and as they cascade down their positive influence multiplies into your life.

An easy example of an upstream habit I try in incorporate is my morning walk. I go for a 45 mins hill walk most days with our dogs. I don’t feel as good if I haven’t gone for my morning walk. The benefits I get from this one walk are numerous. I get the cardio and muscle strength (Legs) benefits of walking up a hill. In addition, I feel happier due to the endorphins and dopamine (happy hormone) from exercise and early sunlight exposure. I notice that I experience better sleep if I have exercised that day. Interestingly, I feel that I make better food choices after I have exercised.

From the upstream habit of my morning walk I experience multiple benefits downstream throughout my day. As Aristotle said, our habits make all the difference. Decide on Upstream habits that have multiple downstream influences.  Incorporate as many upstream habits you can to experience benefits to help you lead a healthier and happier life.
